About Definiens

Definiens was founded in 1994 by Professor Gerd Binnig, the 1986 Physics Nobel Laureate. Today, customers around the world use Definiens' technology to maximize the value of images and thereby enabling better decisions.

Definiens' technology ensures high returns on investment by delivering faster results and deeper insights from which better decisions can be made. While the technology can be applied to any image analysis task, Definiens currently focuses on applications for Life Sciences and Earth Sciences.

In Life Sciences, Definiens' technology is used to accelerate the drug discovery, development, and diagnostics processes. In Earth Sciences, Definiens' technology enables satellite and aerial image classification and analysis with greater speed, accuracy and insight.

The inspiration behind Definiens

The inspiration behind Definiens is the human mind's phenomenal ability to extract pertinent information from images. Together with his team, Gerd Binnig has developed the revolutionary Definiens Cognition Network Technology which emulates the way that human mind understands images.

The Definiens Cognition Network Technology extracts meaningful, context-specific intelligence from any type of data, whether it be text, image, numerical, or in table format. The technology is a revolutionary approach to the challenge, harnessing the expertise of scientists and image analysts with the speed and accuracy of computing power.

Like the human mind, the technology segments and classifies complex objects and perceives the relationships between and the context of objects. It uses these insights to extract intelligence. This groundbreaking approach underpins all of Definiens' patented technology.

A commercial enterprise

In 2000, Definiens became a commercial enterprise with venture capital from TVM (Techno Venture Management) and angel investors. In recent years, Definiens has received additional funding, most recently, from CIPIO Partners, a shareholder since 2005.

Although the potential applications of the Definiens Cognition Network Technology embrace many types of data and markets, the focus of the company is currently image analysis, particularly in life and earth sciences. Definiens aims to build a scalable and profitable global business rapidly in this segment before expanding into other areas.

Ultimately, Definiens seeks to address every situation where customers can benefit from deriving valuable information and intelligence from digital images.
