Original-Definiens in Earth Sciences

The image analysis challenge

Image analysis and information extraction is the primary bottleneck in most areas of geo-intelligence and remote sensing. It remains largely a manual task, conducted by experts.

The heart of the problem is that for any image there may be many plausible interpretations: it requires great experience to determine the correct interpretation with confidence. The difficulties take the form of varied shading and colors, partially-hidden objects, identifying targets from vague indicators and determining three-dimensional depth from two-dimensional projections.

Experienced image analysts resolve these ambiguities with an high degree of accuracy. But, until now, computers have been unable to emulate what goes on in the brain of an analyst.

Definiens Cognition Network Technology®

Definiens Cognition Network Technology extracts meaningful, context-specific intelligence from any type of image. Like the human mind, the technology segments and classifies complex objects and perceives the relationships between and the context of objects. It uses these insights to extract intelligence.

There are three key applications of Definiens technology in Earth Sciences:
  • Rapid Mapping and Feature Extraction Highly automated mapping provides a fast, accurate and up-to-date overview of remote terrain which assists in the planning of defense and humanitarian aid operations, infrastructure planning and natural resource management.
  • Change Detection
Broad area change detection identifies changes over any period of time helping, for example, to monitor variations of vegetation, measure the increased percentage of sealed area within cities for urban planning or assess the progress of reconstruction following disasters.
  • Object Detection and Target Recognition
Definiens-based applications are used for both civil and military purposes, helping to detect threats to critical infrastructure like pipelines, track moving objects and simplify target recognition.

Deployed around the world

Definiens solutions are used by government, commercial entities and research organizations in USA, Canada, Asia and Europe.

They play an important role in international projects such as GMES (Global Monitoring of Environment and Security), NGA's STAR (Synergistic Targeting Auto-extraction and Registration) Program and RIUGV (Remote Sensing for Unmanned Ground Vehicle).
