Questions and the corresponding answers refering to the installation of the product | | I have received a floating hardlock from Definiens. What do I need for installation? |
Please make sure that you have the following items available: • the Definiens installation CD • a floating hardlock license key (a temporary license file is already installed on your hardlock) • an .alf-file which should have been sent to you via e-mail or be attached to the software package on a CD
Please follow the Definiens Installation Guide which is included in your installation package for detailed instructions. The Installation Guide can also be downloaded here.Additional Information:

| | My machine does not locate the hardlock. What might be the problem? |
| This can have different reasons.
• The most obvious is that no hardlock is connected.
• In the case of a serial port hardlock: maybe the hardlocks of other software products create conflicts.
• In some cases this error is also displayed when the hardlock has expired. Clarity can be obtained by running the Hardlock Utility tool and checking the hardlock status by creating a report: Open Hardlock Utility > Generate Report > Select Local or Floating Hardlock > The common information section of the report will display the expiration date of your hardlock.
• If more than one hardlock keys are attached to your machine, then the hardlock used for Definiens clients should be connected first to the port as it is transparent.
• Laptops sometimes have special settings for their parallel ports or the ports might even be disabled. This can also lead to a hardlock not being detected. |
| | I cannot find the .alf file on my machine. What might cause this problem? |
| This message occurs in connection to the floating hardlock. It indicates that either the .alf file is not present or the floating hardlock cannot access the file.
There are two possible reasons why you are getting this message. Firstly, maybe the .alf file is not in the right folder (see "Initialize the Hardlock Server" section in your Installation Guide).
Secondly, maybe you are trying to work locally with a floating hardlock. To allow this the environment variable HL_Licensedir needs to be set. For details see the "Environment Variables" section in your Installation Guide. |
| | When I try to install a vtc-file for my floating dongle via the Hardlock Utility, I receive the error message: "License update failed. License file not found." |
| Please check the alf-file (located in C:\windows\system32) for write protection. The file must not be protected! |
| | Occasionally, when I try to start Definiens I get the message "No valid license found". What does it mean? |
| You can set the IP address in the system Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables of the client machine. However, normally, the Hardlock software automatically detects a hardlock in the network.
Variable: HLS_IPADDR Value: insert the IP address of the Hardlock server (Maybe you need to ask your Administrator for the right value).
If you have a slow connection you can set the following variable in the system control panel of the client computer:
Variable: HLS_WAIT Value: 2000 or still higher. (The value is the number of milliseconds in waiting time for a response from the hardlock server. The connection gets faster as the value gets smaller, however increasing the value results in a more stable connection). |
| | I am using Definiens, but I have some problems with the firewall. What can I do about that? |
| Here is some information about the hardlock broadcast that might be helpful if you have a firewall setup:
Protocol: UDP
Remote address and port: 255.255.255.255: 3047
Especially with Windows XP-Service Pack 2 this is an important issue as a firewall is installed automatically. |
| | I use a dual processor machine. Why is the load of the processor only around 50% during the analysis? |
| A single project can be only processed on a single CPU. However, Windows® switches the load between both CPUs, thus is the reason of the reduced processor load. If you start a second analysis instance on a second project, then the load of both processors will be 100%.
Note: This concept does not apply to the LDH product version. |
| | How can I monitor the status of analysis engine and waiting jobs? |
| A status page provides information about attached analysis engine and waiting jobs. To access the status page of the eCognition JobScheduler go to http://Name of the eCognition ProcessingNetworkNode:8181/ You can change the settings of the eCognition JobScheduler by editing the configuration files. |
| | I am using OS Windows XP-Service Pack 2 and I get the error message "Hardlock module not found". |
| You might not have installed the latest hardlock driver. Please download and install the driver attached. Additional Information:
