The image analysis challenge
Image analysis is fundamental to every stage of the drug development cycle. The task falls largely to experts in a specific therapeutic area who draw on their experience, but the process is slow and, to a considerable degree, subjective. For many years, there has been a great need for an effective automated image analysis solution.
However, any automated image analysis system must be able to handle low signal/noise ratio images, spectral deviations within and between images, experimental variations and ‘biological noise’ – the inherent variability of living organisms. It must be able to compare structures on different scales, classify regions of interest and identify and measure units of interest correctly.
Each one of these tasks is far from trivial; taken together they are an immense challenge. That is why, until now, computers have been unable to emulate the analytical expertise of a human being.
Definiens Cognition Network Technology®
Definiens Cognition Network Technology extracts meaningful, context-specific intelligence from any type of image. Like the human mind, the technology segments and classifies complex objects and perceives the relationships between and the context of objects.
Definiens' technology is used across the entire lifecycle of drug development, helping bioscience and pharmaceutical companies to analyze vast numbers of images quickly, accurately and consistently.
It helps to eliminate poor drug candidates in safety assessments, saving the huge cost of clinical trials. It is a powerful tool for identifying and tracking biomarkers, supporting proof-of-mechanism, proof-of-principle and proof-of-concept studies. Furthermore, because Definiens is built on a robust and open platform it supports translational medicine, enabling results at every stage of drug development to be compared.
There are three key applications of Definiens' technology in Life Sciences:
- Cell-based assays
Definiens' technology provides a comprehensive system for analyzing cell-based and high-content assays in fully-automatic or semi-automatic modes.
- Histopathology
Definiens' technology offers automated digital pathology solutions that handle tasks of any size and deliver accurate and consistent results.
- Non-Invasive Imaging
Definiens' technology provides accurate and consistent diagnosis in difficult cases such as the early stages of cancers and brain disorders.

Deployed around the world
Of the 20 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, 12 of them are already Definiens' customers. So too are many bioscience companies and research institutions in US and Europe.
Definiens' technology supports their research and development programs, bringing them insights that speed up drug development and decrease late stage attrition.
